{"id":15387,"date":"2024-04-11T19:06:27","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T19:06:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncesr.unl.edu\/?page_id=15387"},"modified":"2024-04-11T19:23:19","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T19:23:19","slug":"2010-11-energy-research-grants-cycle-5","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ncesr.unl.edu\/?page_id=15387","title":{"rendered":"2010\/11 Energy Research Grants \u2013 Cycle 5"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-992fac9f7aa44d43e9a0338a452a803e\"><strong>NCESR. <\/strong>The Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research (NCESR), a collaboration between the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), was established in April 2006 to conduct research on renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and energy conservation; and to expand economic opportunities and improve quality of life for Nebraska and the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Goal. <\/strong>The overall goal of the NCESR is to foster research and education in energy sciences by providing funding to support innovative research and collaboration among University of Nebraska-Lincoln faculty and other public- and private-sector organizations and businesses working in energy sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Request for Proposals. <\/strong>The NCESR released the Request for Proposals (RFP) for its fifth competitive round of Energy Research Grants on July 7, 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Selections. <\/strong>The External Advisory Committee (EAC) met on November 24, 2010 and selected 11 energy research projects to fund from among the forty-three proposals submitted by UNL faculty teams. The projects funded, by focus area, are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.&nbsp; Produce or store commercially useable energy supplies from renewable energy sources, such as wind, biomass, solar or geothermal.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Novel Supercapacitors Based on Nano-Structured Materials <\/em>\u2013 Yongfeng Lu, Professor &#8211; Department of Electrical Engineering,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Generation of Biomass-Derived Feedstocks for Biofuel and Bioenergy Production <\/em>\u2013 Jiantao Guo, Assistant Professor &#8211; Department of Chemistry,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Portable Hydroelectricity in a Micro\/Nano-World <\/em>\u2013 Li Tan, Associate Professor &#8211; Department of Engineering Mechanics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Self-X: An Intelligent Large-Scale Battery System for Renewable Energy Storage <\/em>\u2013 Song Ci, Associate Professor &#8211; Department of Computer and Electronics Engineering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>A Two-Phase System for Solar Domestic Water Heating \u2013 <\/em>Siu-Kit Lau, Assistant Professor &#8211; Department of Architectural Engineering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.&nbsp; Improve operating efficiency and use efficiencies in existing power plants, biofuel plants or wind energy facilities.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>The Shadow Price of CO<sub>2<\/sub> Emissions for Nebraska Electricity Generating Plants \u2013<\/em> Lilyan Fulginiti, Professor \u2013 Department of Agricultural Economics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Micro\/Nanomechanical Studies of Switchgrass Composition and Cellulose Breakdown Kinetics \u2013<\/em> Joseph Turner, Professor &#8211; Department of Engineering Mechanics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.&nbsp; Reduce or eliminate negative environmental impacts from energy production systems, including fossil fueled and nuclear power plants, Biofuel systems (crop production, ethanol conversion, co- product use), geothermal, and wind powered generation.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Optimizing Algae and Biogas Production in SUPER Loop Biorefineries <\/em>\u2013 Galen Erickson, Professor &#8211; Department of Animal Science<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Integrated Systems for CO2 Capture, Anaerobic Digestion, and Algae Production <\/em>\u2013 George Oyler, Associate Professor &#8211; Department of Biochemistry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Nanostructured Design of Catalysts for Converting Glycerol to Value Added Chemicals <\/em>\u2013 Xiao Cheng Zeng, Professor &#8211; Department of Chemistry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.&nbsp;&nbsp; Improve energy efficiency and conservation in the residential, commercial or industrial sectors.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Residential Electricity Management and Control Mediated by Occupancy Sensor Networks \u2013<\/em> Dale Tiller, Associate Professor &#8211; Department of Architectural Engineering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right has-small-font-size\">                                                                                                                                                December 2010<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research | University of Nebraska \u2013 Lincoln<br>230 Whittier Research Center | 2200 Vine Street | P.
